Christabel Pankhurst referred to Joan of Arc as the suffragettes’ patron saint. She was the archetypal militant, a pure woman fighting for a cause with single-minded determination, and martyred as a result. Women often impersonated her, dressing in armor and riding a white horse at the front of processions.
